Private Residence--Addition and Remodel
Big Sur, California
This project consists of numerous alterations, additions, and modifications to a contemporary residence on a coastside bluff with broad, stunning views of lichen-covered rocky landscape spilling down to the ocean.
The current owner wishes to enhance the exterior use of the property and expand/modify the residence to meet their personal needs. The existing residence is 2,125 sqft. of livable area. The owner intends to add spaces upon the southwest side for an art studio as well as music room. An existing Guest Suite with private entry would be remodeled.
On the northeast, the existing garage would be transformed into a home office. New area added adjacent would provide for much needed storage and a relocated laundry. The existing laundry area would be transformed into new bar service for entertaining and planned gatherings/events. A new covered carport will be extended from the end wall of the former garage. The existing kitchen will be remodeled.
Lastly, the owner desires exterior stairs to new rooftop decks (where “flat” roofs occur) to take advantage of ocean view opportunities from different vantage points.
Solar photovoltaic panels would be added to pitched portions of the roof that are pitched towards a westward orientation.
The new additions would be designed to employ same materials, finishes, and proportions to blend seamlessly with the existing residence. Most notably, the additions to the southwest would carry through the architectural character of the existing robust post-and-beam timber framing using recycled materials (as originally) to match.
